LED vs. Traditional Lighting

Lighting technology has changed over the years. For most homes and businesses today, LED lighting offers the best combination of efficiency, life span, and flexibility.

Comparison infographic covering LED, incandescent, fluorescent, and CFL lighting.
This side-by-side comparison shows why LED is usually the best all-around choice for modern lighting.

LED Lighting

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs produce light electronically instead of using a heated filament.

  • Lower energy use
  • Longer life
  • Less heat
  • Many color and brightness options
  • Instant, full brightness
  • Lower replacement and energy costs over time

Incandescent Lighting

Incandescent bulbs create light by heating a thin wire filament until it glows. They produce a warm, familiar light but use more electricity and generate more heat.

Best known for warm light and smooth dimming, with higher energy use, more heat, and a shorter life span.

Fluorescent Lighting

Fluorescent lamps use electricity and gas inside a tube to produce light. They have been widely used in offices, garages, schools, and commercial spaces.

They are efficient for large areas, but may flicker, require a ballast, or take time to reach full brightness.

CFL Lighting

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp. CFLs were designed as a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs.

They offer lower energy use and longer life than incandescent bulbs, but some take time to reach full brightness and may not work with every dimmer.

Why Choose LED?

For most lighting applications, LED technology provides the best combination of energy savings, long life, low heat, and lighting options. However, older lighting technologies may still be needed for certain specialty fixtures or replacement applications.
