Lumens Measure Brightness
Lumens tell you how much light a bulb produces. The higher the number of lumens, the brighter the light.
- 450 lumens: soft or lower-level lighting
- 800 lumens: standard household brightness
- 1,100 lumens: bright lighting
- 1,600 lumens: very bright lighting
Watts Measure Energy Use
Watts tell you how much electricity a light bulb uses. Modern LED bulbs can produce the same amount of light as traditional bulbs while using much less energy.
For example, a traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces approximately 800 lumens. An LED bulb can provide similar brightness while using only about 8 to 10 watts.

When selecting a light bulb, look at lumens to choose the brightness you want and watts to understand the bulb's energy use.
