Why Does My Lamp Flicker? Causes and When to Get It Checked

A flickering lamp can be as simple as a loose or failing bulb, but it can also mean a worn in-line switch, socket or cord. Here's how to tell the difference and when to stop using the lamp.

A flickering lamp is usually caused by one of four things: a loose or failing light bulb, a worn in-line switch, a worn socket, or damaged wiring in the cord. The first is an easy fix you can try at home. The others mean a part is failing, and a lamp that keeps flickering for those reasons is not safe to keep using. It should be checked out.

We've repaired lamps in West Los Angeles since 1998, and flickering is one of the most common problems customers bring in. Here's how to narrow down the cause.

Start with the easy fix: check the light bulb

Sometimes the answer really is that simple. Before anything else, unplug the lamp, let the bulb cool, and then:

  • Make sure the bulb is screwed in snugly. A slightly loose bulb loses contact and flickers. Don't overtighten it.
  • Try a different bulb. Bulbs, especially older LEDs and CFLs, can start flickering as they fail. Test with a bulb you know works.
  • Check that the bulb fits the lamp. Make sure the base and wattage match what the lamp is rated for. The label is usually printed near the socket.

If a new, properly seated bulb fixes it, you're done. If the lamp still flickers, the problem is in the lamp itself.

Common cause: a worn in-line switch

Many table and floor lamps have an in-line switch, the small on/off switch on the cord. After years of clicking, the metal contacts inside wear down and stop making a solid connection. Signs include:

  • The light flickers when you touch or move the switch
  • You have to press or hold the switch at an angle to keep the light on
  • The switch feels loose, mushy or no longer clicks
  • The switch feels warm

A failing switch can arc and overheat, so it shouldn't be ignored. The good news is that it's a quick, inexpensive repair: replacing an in-line switch at our shop typically costs around $15 to $20, and the lamp will be working reliably again.

Common cause: a worn socket

The socket holds the bulb and, on many lamps, contains the turn knob or pull chain. Sockets wear out over the years from heat and constant use. A worn socket can cause flickering, a bulb that only lights when you wiggle it, or a switch that won't turn. Replacing a socket at our shop typically costs around $35 to $45.

Common cause: damaged cord or wiring

Older cords dry out and crack, and wires can loosen inside the lamp base or at the plug. If the lamp flickers when you move the cord, or you can see fraying, cracks or exposed wire, the wiring is likely the problem. This is the most serious cause, and the lamp should be unplugged and rewired.

What about dimmers and LED bulbs?

If your lamp has a dimmer, or is plugged into one, the problem may be compatibility rather than a broken part. Many LED bulbs aren't designed for dimmers, and a mismatch can cause flickering or buzzing. Look for bulbs labeled "dimmable" that are compatible with your dimmer. We're happy to help you choose the right one.

Is a flickering lamp dangerous?

It can be. Flickering caused by a bad bulb isn't a hazard. But flickering from a worn switch, socket or damaged wire means electricity isn't flowing cleanly. That can cause sparking and heat buildup, which is a fire risk. Unplug the lamp and stop using it if you notice any of these:

  • Flickering continues with a new bulb
  • Buzzing, crackling or sizzling sounds
  • A burning or hot plastic smell
  • Scorch marks or discoloration on the socket, switch or plug
  • A switch, plug or cord that feels warm
  • Frayed, cracked or exposed wiring

Should I repair it or buy a new lamp?

In most cases, a flickering lamp just needs one small part replaced. That's often much less than the cost of a comparable new lamp, especially for well-made, antique or sentimental pieces. For more help deciding, read our guide: Is My Lamp Worth Repairing or Should I Buy a New One?
